COVER 57 is our Winter 2019 bumper issue. As the new year approaches, the issue reports on the upcoming 2020 design events Heimtextil, AmericasMart Atlanta, Domotex Hannover, Las Vegas Market, Maison et Objet Paris and DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR for a look at what is coming next. The latest rugs due to debut internationally come into focus throughout the magazine, including in our new Collections section highlighting recent rug collections of note: from cc-tapis’ series with Faye Toogood to Eskayel’s dreamy designs for Canadian store Elte.

This issue focuses on materials and fibres both ancient and innovative. Looking at authentic production processes and ancient fibres, rug aficionado Peter Auckland discusses all things wool, while Philip Fimmano reports on a new collection of rugs by Daniel Costa, made of yak hair, and Canadian Hemp Bouquet extols the virtues of hemp rugs. Thinking ecologically, the issue takes a look at PET rugs by Matthew Wailes and Jennifer Manners, Sarawagi’s rug made of the innovative Econyl® yarn soon to debut at Domotex Hannover, Bolon’s 70-year anniversary of sustainable flooring and Alicia Rowbotham’s accessories made from textile industry waste.

In COVER’s new section REthinking the Rug, we discuss exhibiting rugs with Lila Valadan, the anti-statement rug with Maurizio Battilossi, Steve Cibor’s The Rug Club concept and transparency in selling with Meredith Heron. In the rest of the issue we report on American artist Roger Selden’s rug collection for Post Design, Rug Star’s EasyMe collection designed by architect Michael Howells, the Mad Silkman Zika Ascher, and production in Afghanistan comes under the spotlight. Trends looks at new traditionals, the colour neo-mint and varied pile rugs while Spaces admires rugs in hotel settings. We interview ABC Carpet & Home’s new staff members Haynes Robinson and Eileen Applebaum, take a trip to Sardinia, talk rugs with interior designer Adam Hunter and follow the history of London transport moquette.
