Critical Communications Today is dedicated to the global critical communications market. It aims to inspire and inform the critical communications community and is published with the support of TCCA. Initially launched in 2010 as TETRA Today, this publication provides technical advice, authoritative editorial and commentary spanning all areas of mission-critical communications.
Spearheaded by TCCA, the TETRA community put a lot of work into ensuring that TETRA products and solutions could all interoperate with each other. We are in the early days of transition to mission-critical LTE but, as our interview with Jeppe Jepsen reveals, TCCA is leading the way on an interoperability process for it.
Concerns over interoperability are also considered in our feature on the mission-critical LTE market in the USA. FirstNet is designed to offer US first-responders with a single, nationwide MC broadband network yet state and local public safety agencies are not obliged to sign up. There will also be a mix of PTT options so, if the goal of full interoperability is to be realised, all these PTT options and the different carriers will also need to interoperate.
Elsewhere, we take a look at critical communications in Scandinavia, talk to SA6 chairman Suresh Chitturi about progress in 3GPP on mission-critical specifications, and examine facial-recognition technology and what’s required to ensure network resilience.
