First published in November 2011, Hunger is a style and culture publication launched by Rankin, the co-founder of world-renowned magazine Dazed, aimed at the culturally and visually hungry.

The biannual issues are brimming with music, art, culture, documentary and high octane fashion features, editorials and in-depth interviews. Each issue covers both the established and emerging talents in the arts, fashion and editorial sectors, keeping the issue at the cutting-edge of pop culture.

After 12 years and 29 issues of HUNGER magazine, one thing has become clear — we’re committed to giving a platform to the talent and stories that don’t make the headlines. As such, it only made sense to devote an entire issue to the theme of Going Underground; where we go beneath the surface of cultural goings-on and get to meet and raise the profile of those who aren’t receiving mainstream coverage.

Take for example our Ukraine photo series, in which we commissioned three local photographers to document their home-country in the midst of the ongoing war — through their own unique lens. We champion the work of Locate International; a charity made up of volunteers who spend their free time searching for the missing in the UK, many of whom are buried in unmarked graves.

Turning to other forms of activism, we speak to the filmmakers Ken Loach, Paul Laverty and Maysoon Pachachi about how film has the power to change the world, and in Queering the Way, we profile three campaigners about the fight to overturn anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in their native countries. Travelling up north, we meet the bands who are single handedly reviving Manchester’s indie music scene, and also spend some time with the young UK rappers who are soon to be the next big thing.

Our cover stars too embodied the spirit of protest this issue, in part due to the ongoing strike by US actors’ union Sag-Aftra, which meant that Archie Madekwe, Emma Laird, Saffron Hocking and Mimi Keene weren’t able to promote their upcoming film and television projects during their interviews with us. Joe Locke, another cover star, who was shot and interviewed prior to the strike, speaks to us about Heartstopper and breaking into Marvel. Likewise rap heavyweight Flo Milli bares all about her upcoming album, and how she plans to stand out from the crowded hip-hop market in the US.

As usual, we have our regular fixture, HUNGRY, where we highlight the standout singers, actors and artists that you’ll be seeing all over your feeds soon. And, of course, there is ample innovative fashion and beauty programming to feast your eyes on. In this issue, the likes of Chanel, Dior, Guerlain and Fendi will be providing you with inspiration for the season ahead.
