BRITISH speedway will have an exciting addition to the ranks this year after confirmation of Northampton's entry to the Premiership. The new track will boost top flight numbers to six, something British Speedway director Mark Lemon says was vital. In this week's edition, Lemon reveals: “For the integrity and credibility of the sport, running six teams in the league far outweighs having just a five-team competition and the negativity that would create. We were always fully aware of that when we lost Birmingham and Oxford from the Premiership. We all committed at Barnsley in October and the credibility of the sport was of the utmost importance. It was pivotal that we had a sixth team. There have been many challenges and obstacles that have stood in our way towards getting Northampton up and away, but we feel the challenge is warranted to give British speedway a proper tiered structure and a credible Premiership."
