The autumn 2020 issue of Index on Censorship looks at the idea of the disappeared. We discuss the people who have gone missing, such as the millions who have disappeared in China′s western province Xinjiang. And we look at how languages, concepts, documents and culture are fragile too; look the other way and they have gone. Alessio Perrone writes about the disappearance of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, while Uighur-American activist Rushan Abbas writes a heart-wrenching piece on the kidnap of her sister by the Chinese authorities. We also examine social media hacking in Azerbaijan and the imprisonment of protesters in India.

Authors include: Oliver Farry, Issa Sikiti da Silva, Sally Gimson, an interview with Dave Eggers plus short stories from Kaya Genç and Lisa Appignanesi.
