Happy New Year,

We endeavour to bring you fascinating stories and discoveries you won’t see anywhere else across 2025. Just look at our end of year poll in the last issue. It was very us, mixing a few big hitters and critics choices with grass-roots obscure. No, we don’t mirror the status quo, and that’s why you read us, right?

We’re very pleased with the 12 issues we published last year, all featuring a wide array of content, some of which thrilled many and frustrated others. The one thing we have never wanted to be is formulaic and repeat coverage of bands again and again. Want stuff on The Seeds, The Creation, Electric Prunes, Music Machine and 13th Floor Elevators? Subscribers can access all back issues digitally and it is all available in print too. Yet, over 60 years on from the original psychedelic era, fascinating nuggets are still being mined, as well as there being focus on other musical flavours we know will interest you.

Linda Ronstadt has never been featured properly, and she’s made some great records. Ace have just issued the excellent American Baroque: Chamber Pop And Beyond 1967-71, a new Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs collection, which features The Stone Poneys’ ‘Different Drum’. This reminded us of that fascinating period in Rondstadt’s career. From that seed an article grew, and Huw Thomas has done a brilliant job. Whilst there is no overriding theme in the rest of the mag, fans of folk-rock will find plenty to enjoy in our study of esteemed record producer Tom Wilson, notably his work with Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel and Nico, and Fairport Convention’s recollections of Liege & Lief as it celebrates its 55th birthday. The Moody Blues’ John Lodge o ers a fascinating 20 questions; there’s a fascinating scoop on the neglected, Bay Area hippie scene singer Jeannie Piersol, we remember The Things’ forgotten Paisley Underground gem Outside My Window, look back at the final embers of the garage revival and its new spawn in Deep Cuts, and celebrate The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band’s epic box set. And yes, there’s all the important contemporary stuff too.

At this stage in our existence, we feel like a club that has opened its doors to new members. Everyone is welcome. It’s important for to hear what you favour and what you don’t and what you’re listening to. For every ’60s obsessive we meet there’s an equal amount of people equally keen on supporting emerging new talent. And when I say new talent, I don’t mean the bands that fill the front of Spotify and that are featured everywhere, I’m talking about music that will appeal to all Shindig! readers. There is a difference.
