Miguel Adrover on the cover of Replica Man! "When silence says it all.” Miguel Adrover, the Spanish designer who shot like a glistening comet through the New York fashion scene in the aughts, was—and remains—unfiltered!

Disrupting the fashion world with soul; fashion designer and creator Miguel Adrover  reflects on his career spanning over 20 years through an expressive series of self-portraits for Replica Man Issue 11. A pioneer of contemporary fashion thinking, after moving to New York City in 1995 and showing his first collection in 1999; the Spanish-born designer cemented his place in fashion history as one of the 20th centuries great designers with his surrealistic twists on classic visions of Americana; layering classic tailoring with textural sportswear, back to front outerwear and New York Yankees Baseball merch.

Working with repurposed garments and textiles, Adrover’s work stands as a poignant precursor to fashion’s ongoing green revolution. Not only were all of his collections locally produced in his studio in New York’s Bowery district, years before upcycling and seasonless collections became mainstream he worked by adapting garments inherited from his family, friends and famously a coat he found on the street which belonged to Quentin Crisp.  After re-locating to his native Majorca, Adrover is focused on expressing himself and his fashion through new mediums. Not only is he an iconic fashion designer but has since become an incredible photographer, creating striking yet intimate self-portraits, images and art pieces, set against the backdrop of his home in the Balearic Islands.

The discovery.
Asking central questions to the American identity through photography, Rahim Fortune’s work pushes the boundaries of documentary photography whilst redefining how we view an image. An intimate yet striking project, drawing on strength in vulnerability, Replica Man publishes Fortune’s Les Rencontres d'Arles winning series I can’t stand to see you cry; shot in Fortune’s native Texas.

Elsewhere in this issue, we uncover Der Apparat: Andrzej Steinbach’s final portrait series, showing the photographer taking photos. Focusing on a storyline within a figure, Steinbach dissects the individual steps in the act of taking a photograph: how the photographer looks at their subject, how the camera behaves in relation to the body, how the body reacts to the apparatus + more.
