It seems that a strain of bird flu has one again raised its ugly head. The strain, H5N8, was first found in poultry in Scotland and then in two dead Wigeons in Somerset. Recently, the virus has also been found in several dead swans at Abbotsbury in Dorset. The government’s chief veterinary officer, Nigel Gibbens, advises that all poultry and captive bred birds be kept undercover although the risk to human health is very low. There does not seem to be any indication at the moment that falconers should not fly their hawks, although I have heard of a few falconers putting their birds down to moult early. I hope you find a good variety of articles in this issue and I must say a big thank you to Bob Dalton and Paul Beecroft for continuing to supply excellent stories. Their continued support of the magazine is much appreciated and I hope that you, dear reader, enjoy reading their articles.
Don’t forget the up-coming British Falconry & Raptor Fair which will be held on 30 April - 1 May at Duncombe Park, Helmsley, Yorkshire. The event will be run by Bob Dalton and Adam Fry who have taken over the fair from Ron Morris who ran it for 26 years. I hope to see you there.
In the meantime, have a good read.
