Published monthly by the American Guild of Organists, The American Organist is the world’s most widely read magazine dedicated to organ and choral music. Although several publications had ties to the AGO throughout the 20th century, TAO has stood the test of time as the official magazine of the Guild. Founded in 1967 as Music: The AGO Magazine, the publication has been called The American Organist since 1979. Since 1975 the magazine has also been the official journal of the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America.

 

TAO includes an average of six feature articles each month, focusing on organs old and new, composers beloved and unfamiliar, in-depth musical analysis, performance practice, historical curiosities, and more. Also featured are interviews with leading musicians and organbuilders; reviews of recordings, scores, and books; several monthly columns; news of appointments, competitions, premieres, and new organ projects; reports on the activities of AGO chapters throughout the United States and beyond; new choral and organ scores; and the occasional short story.

 

The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to foster a thriving community of musicians who share their knowledge and inspire passion for the organ. TAO advances this mission by publishing content for the full spectrum of the AGO’s membership: dedicated hobbyists, elite professionals, and everyone in between.
